You might have heard of honed and filled travertine tiles but have no idea what it is. There is little doubt you have heard of marble tiles, granite tiles, and even sandstone tiles. What they are made of is self explanatory but what travertine is a bit of a mystery. However it does not need to be a mystery any longer.
In the simplest of terms travertine tiles is a limestone, but it is more than just that. It is a form of limestone formed by supersaturated water found in hot springs. Some of the best examples of it in the US found in Yellowstone, also found around the world in places like Italy, Turkey, Croatia and numerous other locations.
The use of travertine tiles is nothing new. It was used as far back as the Roman Empire to build both bath houses and basilicas. It has been used in more modern times to build some notable structures. It was used in the former Sears Tower, the first floor of the medical center at UCLA and even the Toronto-Dominion Centre.
The grinding process is what is known as honing. Between that and the sealing, it gives travertine tiles a flat finish, that dull or mat finish makes it ideal for kitchen floors because of the traffic they receive. After the honing process there are still holes within the travertine that must be filled, usually by an epoxy resin. Normally this filling is done prior to the stone is ground down. This gives the travertine a smooth finish.
Another reason why people choose travertine tiles are because of the colors. For the most part they are shades of tan, cream or even a light brown. Sometimes, however, shades of pink and red are also found. Every box of tiles will have slightly different shades in them, that is part of its charm. You do need to inspect each box to make sure you do not end up with some from an entirely different color batch.
