Why is grout used? A sticky cement based substance primarily used to add stability to your tiles and protect against mold. However, grout is available in various colors. Its addition, then, is not only a mechanical necessity but can add an artistic accent to your tile design. What types of grout are out there?

Grout Types

Two common types of grout tiles are sanded and non-sanded. What are the differences? In this instance, believe it or not, a lot can be understood by considering the names.

Sanded Grout

As expected, sanded grout does indeed contain sand particles. Why? It is no secret that grout shrinks as it cures. The greater the spaces between tiles, called the joints, the greater the problem shrinkage becomes. Therefore sanded grout is used to prevent too much shrinkage and is used in larger joints, from 0.3 cm and larger. It also helps to support the weight of heavier tiles like granite, marble and limestone. A word of caution is in order. If your tiles have a high finish or polish, there is a possibility that sanded grout could abrade your tiles. So it is the course of wisdom to use it with care.

Non-Sanded

Grout without the sand, or unsanded, is used in joints smaller than 0.3 cm. What are the benefits of non-sanded grout? It would seem that being sand-less would be a big hang-up. In fact, not having the sand makes this kind of grout easier to work with. It is more adhesive and therefore is good for using with wall tiles that need to be placed vertically such as those in your bathroom shower. Worried about keeping your skin looking youthful? Non-sanded grout is also easier on the hands than sanded. However, in joints larger than the recommended space it will tear away from the sides of the tile. Therefore, choose your grout wisely depending on how you plan to use it.
